How to choose earmuffs for the workplace:
Protective earmuffs help reduce the operator's exposure to harmful noise by lowering the volume level measured in decibels according to the SNR parameter. The maximum allowable noise level for an 8-hour workday is set at 85 dB. If the average noise level in your workplace exceeds this threshold, it's essential to select earmuffs with an SNR value that will reduce the noise level to 85 dB or lower. For instance, using earmuffs with an SNR of 32 in a 116 dB environment will lower the effective noise level to 84 dB.
When earmuffs will be worn for extended periods, attention should be paid to design features that enhance comfort. The adequately wide sealing cushions must cover the user's entire auricle. Additionally, soft padding on the headband can alleviate pressure on the crown of the head. The pressure with which the earcups fit against the head impacts both comfort and noise reduction efficiency, so for continuous wear, select earcups with a properly adjusted SNR rather than solely the highest available.
